Six Tips Steps To Choosing A Web Design Company

Jasneen Said:

I am going to assume that you are like most people I know in business (and life!) and are therefore faced with the challenge of making the right decisions, relatively quickly, and in an informed manner. When it comes to choosing a web design company to design or re-design your website, you might not have time for lots of meetings, but in an ideal world you should probably try to meet with two or three different web design companies. Use the six steps below to guide you in making an informed decision that is right for your business:

1. Make a shortlist of web design companies with potential

2. Spend some time looking at their portfolios

3. Meet them and see if you like them

4. Make sure they understand business (not just how to build a website)

5. Do they understand how to target customers?

6. Make your final assessment of their proposal and costs

1. Make a shortlist of web design companies with potential.

We suggest you first ask around for recommendations, (fire off a quick email to all your contacts!) and Yell.com for web design companies within your area. fore visit to:-www.thedesignbuild.comThink about how far are you prepared to travel if you want to go to their office for a meeting. (NB. A couple of our clients take a 3 hour round trip – but they say it’s worth it to be working with us!) When searching on Google, you might try searching for “web design company Surrey” or try to narrow your search with adjectives that are important to you, i.e. “beautiful web design Surrey” or “florist web design Guildford”. In any case, you will have many to choose from, so you may have to simply go through the results one-by-one, until you have two or three that look like they could be the right web design company for you. How do you do this?

2. Spend some time looking at their portfolios.

Any web design company worth dealing with should have on their own website, a well-presented portfolio of their clients’ websites. Spend some time browsing through these. Ask yourself if you find those websites appealing, easy to navigate and that they guide you to important information easily. Is there good use of colour, fonts, images etc? Do you think they have done a good job for their previous/existing clients, and have they worked for any clients in a similar market to you?

Once you have a shortlist based on the best portfolios, choosing the right web design company for your business can be approached swiftly and intelligently using these key points to guide you:

3. Meet them and see if you like them!

We have more than one client who came to us after bad experiences with their previous web design company, bringing me swiftly on to a very important point: Don’t work with someone you have never met. Some web designers work by communicating only by email. It just doesn’t work. Establishing a good face-to-face rapport, which can be continued by telephone (and email as well of course!), is essential to building a productive and enjoyable business relationship. You need to have good, open, honest communication with your web design company so that you get exactly what you want, and maybe even have some fun along the way.

4. Make sure they understand business (not just how to build a website)

Modern, successful web design, (be it by one person or a big agency), will encompass the following three disciplines: 1. Business, 2. Creative and 3. Technical expertise. These are the Magic 3 – look out for them! You need to be able to talk business with your web design company, and for them to understand and make suggestions based on their experience. Their graphic design and technical ability should be clearly visible on their portfolio – you need to make sure all three boxes are ticked.

5. Do they understand how to target customers?

Although some web design companies specialise in designing for certain types of business, you will probably benefit from working with a company whose client-base is varied. Their experience working with such differing briefs and target audiences can bring a lot to the table (I’m talking clever ideas here – not a plate of biscuits).

6. Make your final assessment of their proposal and costs

Having met with the web design companies you should already have a good idea who is going to deliver what you need and be good to work with, but there is a last stage in this process. Following your meeting, you will receive the written proposal (a final chance to be sure that this company understands your needs and is able to meet them), along with a quote. The quote should be detailed (for example, more visit to:-www.my-early-days-on-the-net.com

so you can clearly see how much time is allocated to the design, and coding the site). How to make the final decision? If you can afford it, simply go with the web design company that best meets your needs (based on all of the suggestions in this blog post).

In these uncertain times, where the internet is becoming more important than ever for purchasing decisions, your business needs to be represented by an attractive, usable, informative website that appeals to your target audience. So why not get started today? Or you could put it off ’til later – you have nothing to lose but customers…!

Web Presence: Necessity or Supplement

CODANK WEB DESIGN Said:

In today’s world, Internet access is omnipresent. Wi-fi signals are flowing in almost every school, business, and restaurant. People are accessing information from their cell phone, PDA, iPod, notebook computer, netbook computer, Nintendo Wii and anything else manufacturers can build internet technology into. It only makes sense that consumers are becoming more and more dependent on the Internet. When one needs SEO for their website, the average consumer no longer pulls out their telephone book and starts flipping. This holds true even with non-technological products and services. It is becoming more and more natural for consumers to “Google” what they want to find the best service or quality. With this being the case, it is an expectation of the consumer to be able to find information about your product or service and be able to contact someone with knowledge of the same.

For this reason, having a web presence is no longer just a supplemental way for consumers to contact you; it is a necessity which business owners should pay a great amount of attention to. Even more important is creating an effective web presence that portrays your company appropriately and markets your product or service in a desirable light. Your website will do great things for you but it can also do a disservice to your company if not designed properly. For example, if a consumer finds it difficult to locate a phone number or e-mail contact on your webpage, they have already had one bad experience with you prior to even contacting you! In the past, the Internet market was a more simple environment where users were new and frankly, more patient. In today’s booming Internet economy, users are no longer willing to navigate cumbersome websites or wait for huge files or pictures to load. Consumers can simply move on to the next business where finding information is more efficient. This is why making an easily navigable website provides the consumers first good impression with your company while advertising your product or service and drawing business to your company.

Having a web presence has become the standard of today’s industries. Whether or not your company has anything to do with technology, consumers will be searching the Internet for your product or service. The companies who are prepared with a well-thought out, well-designed web page will be the first to draw the customers in and the others will miss out on their piece of the pie.

Flash Vs CSS – Part 2

Ed Vinicombe Said:

It is also important to point out that search engines like Google and Yahoo have started to crawl and index information and content on flash files. So it is becoming more flash friendly. Yes, this is probably the biggest issue with Flash. I mean what would be the point of designing a site for a client who clearly wants their business to succeed online when no one can even find it over search engines? Unfortunately, when you use flash you are running that risk. Flash files are not exactly “user friendly” they are a gateway for designers. However, as stated this will change. Tim Mayer who is Vice President of Web Search at FAST explained, “Search engines were originally built to index and serve HTML documents, but now the Web has become more diverse in content types, knowing how to treat flash and other types of content has become more important for search engines”.

XHTML and CSS are the growing trend in web design. Using CSS and XHTML fundamentally separates design from content. The user and search engines alike benefit from the simplicity of CSS design. The content is easily indexed into search engines and it gives the user added usability. Additionally, CSS is probably the easiest way to update your website. Through editing a separate style sheet you can make changes across large sites within seconds. CSS delivers content and information in the most purest form so you can spend a lifetime optimizing a site to get in the top positions in Google.

So, a conclusion. Flash was never meant to be used to get into the top positions in Google. It wasn’t designed so you can make sites that are easily optimized for search engines. So how can you blame it? If you know this then don’t use it. Use CSS. If your designing a site for a client who clearly wants their business to be found online then DO NOT use Flash as the content will not be as accessible as CSS. However, Flash can change, which it is. Flash can get better. CSS and HTML have reached the peak and they can still not do things that Flash can. Adobe developers are working hard on making information and content available for search engines but what could possibly get better for CSS? OK, for now I would probably design a site in CSS rather than Flash but I am confident that things will change. CSS is not all a bed of roses and I wouldn’t let it get too far ahead of itself!

Is Web Design Dying Out?

Steve Ceaton Said:

Web design nowadays is getting more involved than ever before.  Gone are the days when a web designer could create a beautiful looking design in Photoshop, and then just slice it into html.  Nowadays this is only the start of the story.

Usability is one of the buzz words going around in the web design world. As are worlds like RSS Feed, Twitter and Call to Action.  A website is so much more about connectivity today than it’s ever been, and a good web designer needs to take all of these things on board when creating a design.

Another huge diversion that web design has taken is in to the world of Flash and video.  Web video is becoming ever more popular as bandwidths have increased and video capability now needs to be thought about and implemented in to our web designs.

With search engines like Google now gaining the ability to read information contained within Flash movies, and even having the ability to decipher human speech, web video is gaining momentum at an incredible pace.  It won’t be long until a standard static website looks as old fashioned as a bowler hat and a dickie bird tie.

Designing a successful website is now demanding a multitude of skills, and the emphasis on teamwork is stronger now than ever.  Ideally before the web designer is even involved a website project should be shown to a search engine marketing specialist.  They will know what social networking widgets will be needed to be worked in to the design, and they should be well versed in search engine optimization, so as to know what will work for the search engines.

Then maybe a graphic designer would be more of a benefit than an actual web designer, to design the back drop and scenery that will contain any ,web presenters or Flash movies.  After this an expert in Flash Actionscript may be required to make any Flash animations, menus or movies interactive and usable.

Finally then a web designer may be able to take all the pieces and put them together to create the website.  It is getting much more difficult now to be a web design one man band, and maybe as the Internet progresses the web designer will play an even lesser role.  We can see a point in the future where websites will be fully animated mini TV shows.  The entire website may then be filmed in a studio, and built in Flash, with a graphic designer designing the peripherals and effects.

It’s all great news for web users, but not so great for web designers.  My advice to any web designers out there both new and experienced it to either learn some new skills (most specifically Flash), or starting building a team to manage to coming onslaught of new website marketing media.

Do Search Engines Care About Valid HTML?

Adam Mcfarland Said:

Like most web developers, I’ve heard a lot about the importance of valid html recently. I’ve read about how it makes it easier for people with disabilities to access your site, how it’s more stable for browsers, and how it will make your site easier to be indexed by the search engines.

So when I set out to design my most recent site, I made sure that I validated each and every page of the site. But then I got to thinking – while it may make my site easier to index, does that mean that it will improve my search engine rankings? How many of the top sites have valid html?

To get a feel for how much value the search engines place on being html validated, I decided to do a little experiment. I started by downloading the handy Firefox HTML Validator Extension (http://users.skynet.be/mgueury/mozilla/) that shows in the corner of the browser whether or not the current page you are on is valid html. It shows a green check when the page is valid, an exclamation point when there are warnings, and a red x when there are serious errors.

I decided to use Yahoo! Buzz Index to determine the top 5 most searched terms for the day, which happened to be “World Cup 2006″, “WWE”, “FIFA”, “Shakira”, and “Paris Hilton”. I then searched each term in the big three search engines (Google, Yahoo!, and MSN) and checked the top 10 results for each with the validator. That gave me 150 of the most important data points on the web for that day.

The results were particularly shocking to me – only 7 of the 150 resulting pages had valid html (4.7%). 97 of the 150 had warnings (64.7%) while 46 of the 150 received the red x (30.7%). The results were pretty much independent of search engine or term. Google had only 4 out of 50 results validate (8%), MSN had 3 of 50 (6%), and Yahoo! had none. The term with the most valid results was “Paris Hilton” which turned up 3 of the 7 valid pages. Now I realize that this isn’t a completely exhaustive study, but it at least shows that valid html doesn’t seem to be much of a factor for the top searches on the top search engines.

Even more surprising was that none of the three search engines home pages validated! How important is valid html if Google, Yahoo!, and MSN don’t even practice it themselves? It should be noted, however, that MSN’s results page was valid html. Yahoo’s homepage had 154 warnings, MSN’s had 65, and Google’s had 22. Google’s search results page not only didn’t validate, it had 6 errors!

In perusing the web I also noticed that immensely popular sites like ESPN.com, IMDB, and MySpace don’t validate. So what is one to conclude from all of this?

It’s reasonable to conclude that at this time valid html isn’t going to help you improve your search position. If it has any impact on results, it is minimal compared to other factors. The other reasons to use valid html are strong and I would still recommend all developers begin validating their sites; just don’t expect that doing it will catapult you up the search rankings right now.

Importance of HTML Tags in Search Engine Optimization

Alexei Carpov Said:

Importance of HTML tags in Search Engine Optimization

Every programmer knows that a code is an essential part of the program, of course besides the logical schema, which has to be worked out beforehand. In web design it is particularly important: it is viewed as a building block by an internet explorer as well as search engine optimizer by google, yahoo, msn and all the rest of the search engines. Thus the proper use of HTML tags will be an optimal tool in order to fulfill the top search place.

As I have already mentioned in my previous paper keywords are playing the most crucial part in SEO, but the combination of those keywords in html tags make it even more extreme in order to achieve SEO. Everybody knows what a Title and Meta tags are and it was talked about a lot. But in reality because of the fact that crawlers and spiders are searching contents from your website starting from top and ending at the bottom, these tags are vital for you to consider.

For example you are a businessman who opens his own small business and tries to attract clients through the web. Your product is weight loss protein shake. You want to be on top of the search list and your company’s name is Magical Weight Loss Shakes Inc, and you product is Body Slimming Shake. Again hierarchy of the web pages will play the key role here you can look it up in my previous article, home page->>products page->> body slimming shake page

Title Body Slimming Protein Shake – Magical Weight Loss – Lose it fast /Title

It is a little bit vague as it might seem from the first time but I covered 3 most important keywords in my title: body slimming, weight loss, lose weight fast. Of course you will choose to name the product so that it reflects the essence of what you do, this will also help you in search engine optimization.

Another important HTML tag is Meta. At this point I would be very picky, don’t just repeat every single word all over again, if you will do it, google will see you as a spam. Try to think as a client who wants to lose weight and searches tips over the web. So I’m a 300 pound man wanting to lose weight but don’t want to exercise, I go to google and search for lose weight with shakes. Top three listings is what I need because I’m too lazy to go further open those three windows and go to view (in menu bar)->  source -> and look at their meta tag. Those are essential keywords of your competitors, don’t rush to cut and paste it, think what you want to achieve.

Lets get back to our example

meta name=”description” content=”Body Slimming Protein Shake – Magical Weight Loss – Lose it fast”

meta name=”keywords” content=”body slimming protein shake-magical weight loss-weight loss, become slim, become slim fast , weigh losing programs, protein shakes for weight loss and slimming, want to slim down, want to lose weight, no exercise weight loss programs… etc

You can go on like this until you think you are satisfied just be reasonable don’t repeat one single word all over the place.

Web Design Companies – How to Choose the Right One for your Business

Andy Lomax Said:

Your website is your company’s calling card on the internet so you need to have one you’re proud of and does the job it’s meant to, and offer pleasant viewing for your browsers which can only be achieved with quality web development. That means getting a professional web development company to develop your site and create web based solutions for your business. But before approaching a web design company, you should clarify your requirements. Here’s how you do it.

Firstly, you must establish your goals. What’s the purpose of your web site? Are you selling products, displaying your portfolio, announcing your services? What do you want your visitors to do? Put yourself in your visitor’s shoes. What do they expect to find at your website?

Next you have to set your budget. Having these figures in hand at the beginning can help in your negotiation with the web design companies. But don’t reveal your budget. Always get quotes based on your needs first. The first thing you would probably do if you live in Liverpool is, go to Google and search for web design companies in Liverpool. Take the advantage of the global reach of the internet and search for web design agencies in UK. Also take into considerations if you have any technical staff you employ, would you need to do the maintenance of the sites yourself? If you do not have the staff, then web based solutions could be the right option for your web development, which are offered by many web design agencies in the UK, how would you find these companies? Just do a quick search in Google for web design agencies UK and it should bring up a long list of web design agencies in the UK. But then it is down to you to single out the right company for your web development needs. However, you could do a more specific search for certain areas like web design companies Manchester , which would be more local so you can go to see your web development company when you may need to. Web design companies in London would tend to be more expensive compared to the rest of the country

Establishing your goals in this way allows you to clearly explain your requirements to the web design agency that you choose. In fact, these are the same types of questions that web development companies ask at the start of any project. Having the answers readily at hand means you have a better chance of getting the site that you want. Plus, the information you gather from these questions can help in choosing the right web development company.

Finally we come to the all-important step of choosing a web design company. Remember that building a website involves the separate skills of design and development. You need a company with expertise in both web design and web development. And if the firm has business skills, then better still, as you will find if you search for web design companies in Birmingham, they have a lot of al round skills in web development and offering web based solutions.

In fact the ideal web design and web development firm should also offer SEO consulting and marketing advice. Searching for web design companies Leeds would give you less choice of web development and SEO, however, if you searched for web design companies Manchester or web design companies London, you would find more companies with mixtures of different skill sets to make your web design and web development project successful, also the firm should be knowledgeable about the fast-changing world of ecommerce and be able to offer solutions such as database integration, content management, and shopping carts, for example. A firm that has this all round knowledge will be able to come up with ideas and advice that lead to total development solutions. So how do you find your dream design firm?

The first thing to do is to make a shortlist of website design and web development companies and check their online portfolios. See if their designs look like they’d work for your concept. Is the layout clean and easy to navigate? Is the image of the company presented well and is the website’s purpose immediately clear? Be wary of designs that are heavy with flash animations, or feature graphics but little text. This suggests the design firm values form over function which is ineffective if you’re trying to sell something. Check if the company has offered web based solutions in the past, ask if you can speak to any of their client who have had web based solutions and web development done from them. Remember, you want to find one firm that can handle both the design and development aspects of website creation. Finally, you should ask for customer references. Then, get in touch with existing clients and ask about their experience with the web design company.

It’s not easy to find the right website design company for your needs. But if you follow the above guidelines, you’ll be able to find the right web design agencies UK for your business. You can find web design companies in all of the UK’s major cities such as Manchester, London, Birmingham, Liverpool and Leeds.
